Piedra
Piedra (also known as Trichomycosis Nodularis) is a fungal infection of the hair follicles that presents as raised nodules (generally on the scalp, face, armpits or genitals). These nodules are either a hard mass of fungal cells or smaller loose nodules that can disperse once brushed. In advanced instances of this condition, the infection can weaken the hair, causing it to break off. This results in patches of hair loss.
There are two types of piedra. Black piedra is caused by the fungi piedra hortae and trichosporon ovoides, which are usually found in tropical regions like South America and East Asia. White peidra is more common to Europe and southern parts of the United States. Both black and white peidra can be transmitted from person to person.
