Abscesses

Abscesses are deep skin infection that start in a hair follicle or oil gland. Most abscesses are caused by bacteria called Staphylococcus. Bacteria enters the body through tiny breaks in the skin (such as cuts or scrapes) or by traveling down a hair into the follicle. Plugged sweat glands, cystic acne, and puncture wounds (for example, splinters) are all common starting points for abscess infections.

An abscess starts as a reddened, firm and painful 1 cm. lump, surrounded by pink skin. Filling with pus, the abscess grows, often forming a point. This pus contains a collection of bacteria, proteins and white blood cells that the body sends to fight the infection. As the abscess softens, pus can be spontaneously drained or surgically opened. Skin abscesses are most common in the armpits, around the genitals, at the base of the spine (pilonidal abscess).

Treating an abscess requires gentle but diligent cleaning throughout the healing process. Terrasil Wound Care guards against infection-causing bacteria while promoting healing. Terrasil also soothes redness and inflammation, which can help the abscess to drain.
